The Salt Spring abattoir is in business – the business of building community, supporting local farmers, and ensuring high quality local food.
More and more livestock is being processed in large-scale factory farms. Here on Salt Spring we are doing something different – we’re running a small-scale facility tailored to the needs of our farmers and consumers.
Benefits of having a local abattoir include:
- Animal agriculture helps us meet our climate goals by supplying local food. Ruminant animals help sequester carbon in the soil and improve soil health for future generations while omnivores like chickens and pigs reduce food waste
- Keeps local animal agriculture possible by reducing farmer’s costs both in time and money spent on transporting animals
- Local processing helps keep food costs down
- Provides local employment
- Local food is better for the environment and provides food security in uncertain times & climate disasters
- Our local abattoir makes it less stressful for the animals as they spend less time in transport
